What Is My Face Shape?
Four measurements, one comparison, and then the step almost every guide skips: checking your pattern against what each guide actually says, because their ratio bands do not agree. This page carries the bands side by side instead of averaging them.
What is my face shape? Pull your hair back, take four measurements in one unit — forehead width, cheekbone width, jaw width, face length — find which of the three widths is widest, compare face length against width, then match the pattern against each guide's own definition. Two things decide more than the arithmetic. First, the jaw measurement itself is disputed: two guides in the top ten double a chin-to-angle reading, three measure corner-to-corner and call the doubling a mistake (both methods are shown below, unreconciled). Second, the ratio bands genuinely disagree — oval sits near 1.5:1 at thefacereport.com, at 1.25–1.45 at oblongfaceshape.com, and near 1.15–1.25 on faceratio.netlify.app's own analyzer basis — so read each row's last column before committing to a label. If two shapes fit, keep both. This site's own face shape detector reads the same four areas from a straight-on photo in your browser and, by design, uses no numeric cut-offs at all.
How Each Guide Defines Each Face Shape
Every ratio below is a stated figure from the guide named beside it, opened on 14 September 2026. Nothing here is a consensus band, because none exists: the site's own detector page puts it as "there are no validated universal ratio bands for face shape, so this tool does not invent numeric cut-offs."

The Jaw Measurement Itself Is Disputed
The single biggest fork in the top ten is not a ratio — it is what "jaw width" even means. Both methods, as their guides state them:
- Corner to corner. oblongfaceshape.com: "straight across the widest part of your jaw, corner to corner. Do not follow the curve of the jawline down to the chin" — and it names the alternative as a "common mistake: measuring 'jawline length' from chin to ear." thefacereport.com: "from one jaw angle (where the jaw turns up toward the ear) across to the other." glowprint.app: "from the angle of your jaw on one side, across to the other side, passing under your chin." faceshapedetector.app's main guide: "from one jaw corner to the other, across the bottom of the face."
- Chin to angle, doubled. The webflow PDF guide: measure from below the ear down to the tip of the chin, "to account for your entire jaw, multiply this measurement by two" — while warning that starting below the ear has produced "some abnormally large jawline measurements." faceshapedetector.app's own blog page: "from the middle of your chin up to where your jaw naturally curves, double this measurement as it's only half of your jawline."
One site calls the other method a mistake, the other doubles it without comment, and faceshapedetector.com uses corner-to-corner on its main page and doubling on its blog. No reconciliation is offered here because none exists in the sources: whichever sheet you use, the J number changes with the method, and so does every threshold that touches it. Note the doubling method's arithmetic: it assumes your two sides match. oblongfaceshape.com's corner-to-corner line does not need that assumption.
Two baseline differences run underneath the ratio disputes. Where length starts: faceratio.netlify.app states its analyzer measures from the top of the detected outline (mid-forehead) to the chin, and a hairline tape "typically reads about 0.15–0.25 higher" — its thresholds are calibrated to the analyzer. thefacereport.com says the same thing in its own words: the photo detector "cannot see the true hairline," so its number and a tape number will not match. And what width means: oblongfaceshape.com divides by the average of forehead, cheekbone, and jaw; faceratio.netlify.app, faceshapedetector.app's blog, and glowprint.app divide by cheekbone width; the PDF guide never divides at all, only ranks.
- Typical adult face length 17–23 cm (oblongfaceshape.com) → 17 ÷ 2.54 = 6.7 in; 23 ÷ 2.54 = 9.1 in — the guide's own FAQ rounds the top end to 9 in; both figures are shown rather than quietly picking one
- Typical adult cheekbone width 12–15 cm (oblongfaceshape.com) → 12 ÷ 2.54 = 4.7 in; 15 ÷ 2.54 = 5.9 in (the guide pairs these itself)
- Mirror-tracing distance 30 cm (faceshapedetector.app) → 30 ÷ 2.54 = 11.8 in
- Jaw angle sits about 2–3 cm above the chin point (faceshapedetector.app) → 2 ÷ 2.54 = 0.8 in; 3 ÷ 2.54 = 1.2 in
- A high ponytail adds 2–4 cm to perceived face length (glowtira.app) → 4 ÷ 2.54 = 1.6 in
- Reverse direction: 9 in × 2.54 = 22.9 cm; 6.7 in × 2.54 = 17.0 cm
Formulas: inches = centimetres ÷ 2.54; centimetres = inches × 2.54, both on the fixed definition of an inch. The cm figures above are stated numbers from the named guides; only the divisions and multiplications are this page's arithmetic. Pick one unit before you start and keep it for all four readings — a forehead in centimetres compared against a cheekbone in inches is a comparison of nothing.

The bands do not converge with date. The newest dated page (thefacereport.com, 4 September 2026) puts oval at ~1.5 : 1; oblongfaceshape.com (5 July 2026) keeps it at 1.25–1.45; faceratio.netlify.app and the webflow PDF display no publication date, so their numbers are used in the chart above and excluded from this dated table. Nothing here says which band is right — the pattern across dates is that each house keeps its own.
Take the Four Readings
Soft tape or string-plus-ruler, hair fully back, one unit for everything. Each line below is the named guide's own instruction; the sheet in the CSV carries the same lines with full URLs.
- Forehead width (F). Straight across the widest point. The placement zone is where the guides cluster: "halfway between your hairline and your eyebrows" (thefacereport.com, glowprint.app, faceshapedetector.app's blog), "about one finger above your eyebrows, hairline edge to hairline edge" (oblongfaceshape.com), "about a finger-width below the hairline" (glowtira.app). To locate a hidden hairline, the webflow PDF offers its palm trick: little finger across the eyebrows, and the index-finger knuckle lands at the hairline tip.
- Cheekbone width (C). Straight across the outermost cheekbone points — "just below the outer corners of your eyes" is the phrasing at thefacereport.com, glowprint.app, oblongfaceshape.com, and faceshapedetector.app; the PDF locates the bone by running a finger down from the outer eye corner until it hits bone. faceshapedetector.app warns the single most common error is taking this one too low, across the cheeks instead of the cheekbones.
- Jaw width (J). Pick a method knowingly — both are above, both are named. If corner-to-corner: the jaw angle sits "about 2–3cm above the chin point on most people" (faceshapedetector.app). If doubling: the PDF's caution applies — a few extra centimetres from starting below the ear "can significantly impact your results."
- Face length (L). From the centre of the hairline straight down to the tip of the chin (every guide in the set). One addition from the PDF: if you have a widow's peak, measure from the peak itself, not the surrounding hairline.
Then the comparison, in the order the guides actually use it: which of F, C, J is widest — forehead-led points to heart, cheekbone-led to diamond, jaw-led to triangle (thefacereport.com's "reading the numbers" rules and faceshapedetector.app's Ratio B). Then length against width, on whichever formula you chose, matched against the bands in the chart above with the dispute column read first. faceshapedetector.app's blog recommends taking each reading twice and averaging; glowtira.app quotes the cosmetology-school rule — "if two shapes feel close, prefer the longer one. Most people underestimate how tall their face actually is" (Milady Standard Cosmetology, 14th ed., as quoted by glowtira.app).
For a second check that skips the tape, the face shape detector on the home page measures the four areas from a straight-on photo in your browser — the photo is not uploaded — and reports a long, balanced, heart, diamond, or triangle profile without numeric cut-offs, keeping round-versus-square and oval-versus-oblong explicitly uncertain rather than guessed.
Why One Head Can Read Two Shapes
The bands disagree for reasons, not sloppiness, and the reasons are the real content:
- No validated universal bands exist. This is the line this site's own detector runs on, and the honest ceiling of the whole exercise: every number in the chart above is a house threshold, not a measurement standard. Treat the label as a styling reference, not a category you were assigned.
- Different baselines. Hairline-start versus mid-forehead-start length alone moves the ratio by the 0.15–0.25 that faceratio.netlify.app states; thefacereport.com warns its photo number and a tape number will not match. Two tools, two numbers, same face.
- Different denominators. Length ÷ cheekbone width (faceratio.netlify.app, faceshapedetector.app's blog, glowprint.app) and length ÷ the average of three widths (oblongfaceshape.com) are different math on the same face. The PDF ranks without dividing at all.
- Six shapes or seven. Four of the ten pages carry no triangle. A jaw-dominant face is a triangle on a seven-shape page and gets folded into square or round on a six-shape page (perfectcorp.com's note).
- The jaw number itself moves. Corner-to-corner and chin-to-angle-doubled produce different J values before any threshold is applied — see the dispute section above.
- Blends are the norm, not the failure mode. glowtira.app quotes roughly 1 in 5 people sitting between two categories; faceshapedetector.app writes "most people fall between two shapes"; thefacereport.com's tool reports the closest profile and the next-closest on purpose. If your numbers straddle a boundary, keeping both labels is what the sources themselves do.
- Soft tissue and time. Weight change can make a face measure rounder and age-related volume loss can sharpen cheekbones toward diamond or oblong (oblongfaceshape.com); the underlying bone stays put while the visible outline moves. Remeasure after big changes rather than reusing an old label.
- Your own hands are a error source. A centimetre of tape placement can flip the shape (faceshapedetector.app's blog); a rigid ruler cannot follow facial curves for width (both the PDF and faceshapedetector.app's how-to page say soft tape or string); a high ponytail adds a phantom 2–4 cm to perceived length (glowtira.app); clenching the jaw widens it "by several millimetres" (oblongfaceshape.com). Two readings per point, averaged, is the cheapest fix — and the one two of the ten guides actually recommend.
Honesty note. Every ratio, threshold, centimetre range, and percentage on this page belongs to the guide named beside it, opened on 14 September 2026. The guides disagree — on the oval band, on the round ceiling, on the heart spread, on what diamond's leading axis even is, on whether triangle exists, on how to measure the jaw — and those disagreements are carried, not averaged into a fake consensus. The divisions and multiplications in the conversion box are arithmetic on the fixed definition of an inch; nothing else is this page's invention. Accuracy figures (95%, 92%+, 85–92%, 80–88%) are the sites' self-reported claims and are labelled as such; thefacereport.com, for contrast, states it does "not claim a validated accuracy percentage." This site's own detector uses no numeric ratio bands by design — the same stance this page keeps by attributing every band to its house.
